Goals

This team is part of the US Black Heritage Project. Our goals are the following with specific emphasis on Virginia:

  • To collect in one place information and resources to assist in building and documenting African-American Genealogies. See African-American Resources for Virginia for list of resources by county
  • To create the largest online public database of connected African-American families.
  • To bring together WikiTreers interested in connecting African-American families to the Global Family Tree.
  • To process all types of documents from Virginia regarding free and enslaved ancestors with the goal of creating their profiles and connecting them to their descendants.
  • To provide and maintain a logical and organized structure to help individuals identify their ancestors and celebrate their history.
  • To improve all profiles of ancestors with Black heritage in Virginia, which may include biography building, sourcing, and making correct connections.

January 2024 Focus

For the month of January 2024, the Virginia Team will focus on Buchanan County. All help is appreciated, even if you are not formally a participant in the USBH Project. For information on USBH Project standards, please see US Black Heritage: Heritage Exchange Portal.

Resources for Buchanan County, Virginia

Buchanan County, Virginia, was formed in 1858 from portions of Russell County (itself established from a section of Washington County, Virginia, in 1786) and Tazewell County (which was established in 1799 from portions of Russell County and Wythe County), Virginia. (In 1880, part of Buchanan County was taken to form Virginia's "youngest" county, Dickenson County, so some areas previously in Buchanan County later were in present-day Dickenson.) The Buchanan County seat is Grundy. In 1860, 1.1 percent of Buchanan County's population was enslaved (31 people), the smallest number of enslaved people enumerated in any Virginia county.

Hi folks! Denise and I are on the Freedmen's Bureau Fridays call. Dr. Shelley Murphy of UVa mentioned this 1864 census of Accomack county that I wanted to add to your resource list. I hope it helps! Of course let me know if you prefer we not edit the team page directly. - Karen

Hi Karen, all resources should go on the state resources page (and in some cases, the county level page instead of state). Here's the Virginia page https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Space:African-American_Resources_for_Virginia
I am working on a few profiles for enslavers and FSPs for enslaved for Alexandria City and need help with categories. I'm simultaneously learning about the confusing geographic history of Alexandria. Would a "District of Columbia slave owners/slave" category be considered in Virginia for USBH project purposes for the period of 1791-1846 or its own geographic region? After 1846, would Alexandria have its own category as an independent city within Virginia? I am working on the time period 1820-1860. Thanks!

Hi Connie, the Maryland team has taken on and added the District of Columbia to its team. I am sending you a PM. But FYI, all the categories are there for slave owner/slave in District of Columbia and Alexandria, Virginia.

I think this is more a question of time period--which location name was used during which time period. I wish I had the answer, but I don't know that area's history. Emma
I have completed an excel spreadsheet of the plantation owners on the 1860 US Census for Albemarle County. At present there are approximately 2,000 entries. I've created a space page but have yet to upload the spreadsheet pending some additional cleanup. Just want to let you know it should be available soon. Wish I'd known you were focusing on Albemarle County in January (although I don't know that I would have been able to complete this space page any sooner).

Dreama, if you have that page ready, feel free to post it here. We are in Albemarle through Feb. Thank you!

Sorry, I thought I'd already added it. I've updated this page and the 1860 Slave Schedule, Slave Owner Index page.
